How does one go about knowing what vintage size they are? How do you know it’s going to fit when you are buying someting online?

Great question, and Im often asked! Since the US sizing standard  has changed tremedously since it was first put out in 1958; My best advice is to forget the size label entirely and stick to measurements.

Take out some of your favorite garments that fit you beautifully. Lay them out flat and measure the bust by going armpit to armpit, take that number and double it. Then do the same thing at the waist and hip. Then measure from the top of shoulder down to the hem. This will give you the length measurement.  If you want you can also measure from shoulder seam to seam and down the sleeve but not all vintage dealers will provide those additional measurements.  (we do!)

Any vintage dealer worth their salt will Have flat lay measurements listed out for their garments and matching up these measurements with your own will better ensure a great fit.

Be that as it may, I always advise clients not to miss out on a great vintage piece because it’s not the perfect size. You can always have alterations made relatively on the cheap.

Seams can be taken in or let out or you can wear a piece in an unconventional way.  For example: A vintage maxi that’s too small can be easily transformed into a beautiful long duster. A tunic that’s too big totally transformed into a chic gogo dress with a pair of tights and a belt!

Get creative. Have fun. That’s what vintage is all about. It’s wearable history. So here’s to your next great vintage garment! Hopefully you’ll find it here at our shop!
